As a large active rift basin in central China, Weihe Basin subsided and infilled in response to the uplift of the Tibetan Plateau and Asian monsoon variations. Many rivers drain out the erodible Chinese Loess Plateau with tremendous detritus and then build up considerable fluvial sequences. Scarcity of organic material and potential poor bleaching make the fluvial deposits difficult to date with radiocarbon and optically stimulated luminescence OSL technique, and as a result hinder the palaeoflood reconstruction. This study attempts to compare OSL ages resulted from different grain size fractions of quartz, and then cross-checks with independent radiocarbon ages, aiming to choose proper method to reconstruct the chronology of a fluvial sequence from the valley bank of Shichuan River, a tributary of Weihe River. The results show that the coarse quartz grains experienced better bleaching than fine quartz grains, and the comparison with AMS 14C ages further confirms the efficient bleaching of the coarse quartz grains before burial. The sufficient bleaching of the coarse fraction could be attributed to sediment source from the upstream mountainous areas and long-distance transportation.

Now, algorithm to bag best dating partner.. Retrieved Feb 05 from https: Researchers have developed an algorithm for dating sites that uses a person’s contact history to recommend partners with whom they may be more amorously compatible. Kang Zhao, assistant professor of management sciences in the Tippie College of Business, and University of Iowa doctoral student Xi Wang’s algorithm’s similar to the model Netflix uses to recommend movies users might like by tracking their viewing history.
Zhao’s team used data provided by a popular commercial online dating company whose identity is being kept confidential. It looked at , initial contacts involving 47, users in two U. Of the users, 28, were men and 19, were women, and men made 80 percent of the initial contacts. Zhao says the data suggests that only about 25 percent of those initial contacts were actually reciprocated. To improve that rate, Zhao’s team developed a model that combines two factors to recommend contacts: Those combinations of taste and attractiveness, Zhao says, do a better job of predicting successful connections than relying on information that clients enter into their profile, because what people put in their profile may not always be what they’re really interested in.
They could be intentionally misleading, or may not know themselves well enough to know their own tastes in the opposite sex, Zhao theorizes.

Thank you for signing up for our e-newsletter! You should start receiving the e-newsletters within a couple days. Perhaps part of the problem I have with the idea of connecting via the Internet is how much our online selves are not our real selves. Consider social networking sites like Facebook or Instagram. Our online selves are idealized versions of who we want to be, not portraits of who we actually are. How can an online profile possibly lead to love?
Think though, of a first date. The first impressions we try to give in person are idealized as well.

The researchers at the University of Iowa have addressed an underlying problem of online dating sites. Well, not a printable one, anyway. Instead, the researchers add a note of reality by analyzing the replies you get, and use this to work out how attractive you are. This is a scary thought for many of us, and one we may well not want an honest answer to. The results are used to recommend people who might actually reply if you get in contact with them.
The theory behind this has been tested out using data from which names and identifying data has been removed, drawn from a dating website with 47, users over days. The data from the first days is used as a training set to calculate the attractiveness and tastes of each user. In each case, the researchers first looked at the number of potential dates recommended by the three methods, and analyzed how many potential dates the users contacted to estimate how good the methods are at estimating whether the user will find potential dates attractive.
Next, the researchers looked at how many of the contacts actually replied as the measure of how suitable the date was. We have been warned.
